Who is Hayri Çizel? (1891-1950)

He was born in 1891 in Dimetoka District of Edirne Sanjak and finished primary school there. He became a student of painter Hasan Rıza at Edirne High School. Influenced by him, he painted war scenes. After completing his education in Edirne, he studied at Sanayi-i Nefise Mektebi (today’s Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University) under Ömer Adil, Valery and German Artist Hern Warnia.
He graduated from Sanayi-i Nefise Mektebi in 1914 with the first place. After a short reserve officer training, he was sent to the Gallipoli War. After his military service, Çizel was sent to Munich by the state and worked in the workshop of painter Hans Hofmann for a while. After returning home, she worked as an art teacher at Erenköy and Istanbul girls’ high schools, Kuleli and Halıcıoğlu military high schools and Davutpaşa secondary school. He passed away on October 13, 1950, while working at Istanbul Boys’ High School, where he worked in his last years.

The solidity of line and composition and the richness of color in his paintings are based on the education he received at the School of Fine Arts. Çizel, who participated in the wars on the Gallipoli Peninsula as a reserve officer, created an album with sketches and watercolors drawn from the battlefields whenever he had the opportunity.
In this album, prepared in 1915, he identified the places where the war took place, the villages, the deployment of tents and soldiers through on-site observations. In these paintings, which are like a war diary, Hayri Çizel has brought his observations to the level of a visual event and document, with a solid pattern and natural colors.
In his other paintings, Hayri Çizel participates in the 1914 Generation’s understanding of color / light influenced by simple form and impressionism, with distinctions from personal observation. Especially in his landscapes, the passion for experienced nature maintains its dominance in outdoor painting with its purified, luminous color values.
Istanbul fan Çizel is one of the leading names of the Turkish impressionist generation. Apart from the paintings he painted in Edirne, Istanbul, Bursa and Ankara, he also has portrait, landscape, interior and still nature works.
