Ömer Adil

Who is Ömer Adil? (1868, Istanbul – 1928, Istanbul)

Ömer Adil, an impressionist painter, was one of the first Turkish art teachers to teach at Sanayi-i Nefise Mektebi.
He graduated from Sanayi-i Nefise Mektebi (today’s Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University). After his graduation, he took a trip to Italy. He returned from Italy with significant savings. Italian art always showed its influence in his landscapes.
After returning home, he started teaching at Sanayi-i Nefise Mektebi, the school he graduated from. He was the first Turkish painter to start working with foreign teachers at this school.
In 1919, he served as the principal of İnas Sanayi-i Nefise Mektebi (Fine Arts Girls’ School) together with Müfide Kadri Hanım.

It has a classical-realist tendency. He grew up with traditional painting knowledge and sometimes depicted the reality of the city with local motifs. He remained completely devoted to nature in his paintings and produced works with an understanding of painting that used daylight.

He worked hard to raise our first female painters. The painting he made called “Workshop” is a historical document as it shows the İnas Sanayi-i Nefise School.
