The “Wabi-Sabi-Lotus 5 Group Japanese Art Exhibition” organized to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Turkey-Japan relations brings the Japanese government and ancient technologies together with art lovers. The curator of the exhibition, Erdal Küçükyalçın, states that the “Wabi-Sabi” concept explores the prevalence of incompleteness and transience. The exhibition, which can be visited until December 22, aims to contribute to the spread of Japanese art.

The “Wabi-Sabi-Lotus 5 Group Japanese Art Exhibition” organized to mark the 100th anniversary of Turkey-Japan diplomatic relations opened at the Beyoğlu Municipality 6th Department Art Gallery.

The exhibition, organized by the Japanese Art Center in cooperation with the Japan Research Association and with the support of the Consulate General of Japan in Istanbul, brings the “Wabi-Sabi” concept, which represents the essence of this country’s aesthetic understanding, together with art lovers.

The head of the Japanese Art Center and curator of the exhibition, Erdal Küçükyalçın, told AA that they wanted to be a bridge between the center and traditional Japanese arts and the art community in Turkey.

Küçükyalçın stated that they try to organize a large-scale exhibition on Japanese arts every year and said, “We have prepared exhibitions regularly except for the pandemic. After a break, we had the opportunity to present this exhibition to art lovers. We put a lot of effort into the exhibition. Our exhibition consists of the works of 50 of our students working in the field of Japanese arts. By teaching our students Japanese art techniques, we tried to enrich their methods of expressing themselves as artists.”

“This concept represents the essence of the Japanese aesthetic understanding”

Küçükyalçın, who stated that the exhibition was created with the concept of “Wabi-Sabi”, said, “This concept represents the essence of the Japanese aesthetic understanding. ‘Wabi-Sabi’ expresses the beauty in simplicity, wear and tear and incompleteness. Here, the artist internalizes the sense of transience given by the falling sakura leaves, while expressing himself with traditional methods consisting entirely of natural paint, paper and brushes. ‘Wabi-Sabi’ describes how seemingly opposite dualities such as emptiness-fullness, existence-nonexistence have an essence that complements each other.” he said.

Küçükyalçın emphasized that “Wabi-Sabi”, which expresses the essence of Japanese art, has an important meaning in the personal development of the artist and noted the following:

“Artists who produce with the concept of Wabi-Sabi see the deficiency in the essence of everything and reach an important wisdom about themselves. Here, the artist sees that what exists is beautiful with the flaws it has. Realizing that everything exists with a formation and decay is the most important moment of discovering the beauty in the essence of man and life. I believe that our exhibition will contribute to the introduction of the ancient Japanese art technique and the spread of this art.”

The exhibition can be visited until December 22. (AA)
