Who is Hamit Mert Ulcay (1974 – Istanbul)
In 1996 Ulcay began studying painting with Mehmet Güleryüz, one of the most recognized
contemporary Turkish painters, in his studio in Istanbul. He continued his studies in Sevinç
Altan’s studio in 2000 until he moved to Stuttgart/Germany in 2003.
In the guidance of Güleryüz and Altan he deliberately never attended to an Academy but found
his own language in his paintings. He has participated in various group exhibitions in Istanbul
and in Stuttgart. In year 2003 he participated in the group exhibition of “International Art
Action for Peace” with Turkey’s recognized contemporary painters in Istanbul/Turkey. One of
his works was elected for the Collection of the German Foreigner’s Office.
Ulcay is a member of the Württemberg Art Association in Stuttgart/Germany. In year 2023
he was elected as the semi-finalist at Artbox Basel/Switzerland. He had several online and in
attendance solo exhibitions. Ulcay has been living and working in Stuttgart/Germany since
2003.
Art Perspective;
Ulcay’s paintings can be described as emotional, introverted, naiv and truly figurative in their
expression. His ongoing interest in the emotional expression of humans and animals and
their emotional impulses behind the “face” guides his painterly work to date. His works
mostly created as the painting grows and lives. Ulcay mostly uses paper instead of canvas, to
show that just with paper and pencil or paint, one can paint and draw.
