Istanbul Modern is preparing for an exhibition by Japanese artist Chiharu Shiota. The exhibition titled 'Chiharu Shiota: Between Worlds' will meet art lovers on September 6.

The exhibition, which includes a large-scale installation specially produced by Chiharu Shiota for Istanbul Modern as part of the 100th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Turkey, is realized in partnership with the Japan Foundation, in cooperation with the Embassy of Japan and the Consulate General of Japan in Istanbul, and with the support of Arnica.

The exhibition titled “Chiharu Shiota: Between Worlds”, prepared by Istanbul Modern Chief Curator Öykü Özsoy Sağnak and Assistant Curator Yazın Öztürk, focuses on topics such as memory, existence, migration, journey and human experience, which the artist frequently uses in various forms of expression such as performance, video, installation and painting.

Shiota produces her large-scale installation titled “Between Worlds”, which also gives its name to the exhibition, based on Istanbul’s location at the intersection of Asia and Europe. Chiharu Shiota, who represented Japan at the Venice Biennale in 2015, will be exhibiting an installation at Istanbul Modern, offering the opportunity to explore individual stories that the artist associates with personal and collective memory.

The exhibition “Chiharu Shiota: Between Worlds” can be visited at Istanbul Modern between September 6, 2024 and April 20, 2025.

Who is Chiharu Shiota?

Chiharu Shiota, who redefines the concepts of memory and consciousness by collecting ordinary objects such as shoes, keys, beds, chairs and dresses and wrapping them in giant structures made of thread, was born in Osaka in 1972. Continuing her work in Berlin, Shiota explores the feeling of “presence in absence” with her installations, while also revealing abstract emotions that she associates with human existence in her sculptures, drawings, performance videos, photographs and canvases.

Shiota, who was awarded the “Encouragement Award for New Artists by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan” in 2008, has had his works exhibited in international institutions such as the Hammer Museum, Queensland Gallery of Modern Art (QAGoMA), ZKM | Zentrum für Kunst und Medien, Mori Art Museum, Gropius Bau, Smithsonian Institution Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, Kochi Art Museum and Osaka National Museum of Art. The artist has also participated in many international exhibitions such as Aichi Triennial (2022), Oku-Noto International Art Festival (2017), Sydney Biennale (2016), Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial (2009) and Yokohama Triennial (2001).
