On August 30, 2024, Datça's Painter, Oğuz Tığlı's exhibition titled 'Oğuz TIĞLI Watercolor Painting from the Past to the Future' was opened to art lovers at the Cape Krio Hotel's Luvi art gallery with a speech by Painter İbrahim Çiftçioğlu about Oğuz Tığlı and the art life in Datça. The opening of the traditional painting exhibition of Datça Painter Oğuz Tığlı was interesting for me, not only to experience the magnificent opening of Cape Krio, which is called 'A holiday, a wedding of the artist', but also to listen to the interesting story of the Luvi name given to the Art Gallery. The İşleyici Family entered tourism 10 years ago with the Datça Vineyard Farm, which they established 7 km from the center of Datça and which also has vineyards, a wine production facility, a sales point, a wine bar and accommodation. The family’s son Yalım İşleyici, who is equipped with his knowledge and skills in the world of wine and the international education he received, took over the management of the farm, while the family’s daughter Simin İşleyici, who received tourism education in Switzerland and England, took over the management of the boutique hotel they opened in the center of Datça. The İşleyici family wanted to reflect their interest in culture, art and history, and their respect for Datça and the comfort of life in the projects they implemented, and they opened an Art Gallery Salon within the Cape Krio Hotel where artists could exhibit their works. When the hotel manager Melehat Keskin introduced me to the hotel owner Hasan İşleyici at the opening of Oğuz Tığlı’s exhibition in the art gallery, I asked him why an art gallery was opened in the hotel and why it was named Luvi. ‘Datça has hosted art and artists for years. As Cape Krio, we aimed to open an art gallery and host the works of valuable artists and to introduce the works to art lovers in a decent environment. We named it in memory of my dear friend Cihan Uğurlu, who introduced me to this mysterious LUWIAN empire, meaning Light, with his book “Death of a Luvi”. Unfortunately, he could not come to the opening of the hotel. I remember him with longing, he said, ‘May it remain in the light’. In history, the Luwians lived from 2300 BC to 1400 BC, and established a civilization that included the coasts starting from Selçuk and extending to Antakya and all of Central Anatolia. They have their own language, writing. They have a polytheistic religion and temples. Luwian means people of light in their own language. In later periods, they disappeared from the stage of history, remaining under the shadow of the Hittite Empire. Oğuz Tığlı, whose exhibition opened with a cocktail party given to art lovers who gathered on the terrace of the Luvi Art Gallery overlooking the Datça harbor, was born in 1937. He spent his childhood with his mother and grandfather in Eğridir due to his father working as a temporary head teacher at the Village Institutes and traveling from village to village. He started primary school there. He also got to know nature in Eğirdir. He started painting, but his father sent him to a private painting course with someone studying at the academy in Ankara, which made him progress. After high school, he started his career in printing, advertising and photography. Although he worked with oil paints at first, he was introduced to watercolor during his advertising work and abandoned oil painting. He first came to Datça in 1960, walking from Marmaris with a friend while working in Istanbul. He settled in Datça in 1993. Reflecting nature and its beauties in his paintings, and finding this in the rich nature of Datça, Tığlı, the master who opened his first personal exhibition in 1991 at the Dadyadost Art House in Kadıköy, Istanbul; although he also opened personal exhibitions and participated in group exhibitions in Bremen, Ankara, Istanbul and Antalya, Germany, he opened most of his exhibitions in Datça. Oğuz Tığlı, who could not attend the opening of his exhibition and the holiday due to his illness, made do with the photographs and videos we sent him. He said, "A person gets carried away by the flow of water and paint. Let's say you hit the wrong color, the whole work is gone. You draw a new paper, you start over. But as the colors increase, a person feels very happy," and continues his watercolor painting life in his house in Datça. It was read from the faces of those visiting the exhibition that they were in agreement that Artist Oğuz Tığlı was also a LIGHT for Datça art.
