Mübin Orhon (1924 Istanbul -1981-Paris)
He was born in Istanbul in 1924. He completed his education at Ankara University Faculty of Political Sciences, which he entered in 1942, in 1947. In 1948, he went to Paris Sorbonne University to get his doctorate in Economics.
Orhon, who turned to art in Paris, studied drawing at the Académie de la Grand Chaumiere until 1954. He founded the Abstract Art Workshop together with İlhan Koman, Şadi Çalık and Şadi Öziş. In the second half of the 1950s, the geometric abstractionist style of his painting was replaced by an understanding in which negative values came to the fore.
After living in Turkey between 1964 and 1968, he returned to Paris and stayed there until his death in 1981. When he returned to Paris in 1968, he left his lyrical-abstract style behind and turned to monochrome works. The geometric abstractions he painted from 1975 until his death in 1981 constituted the mature period of his art.
Art
After his geometric abstract works, he adopted a smear approach, similar to the Paris School artists, and emphasized textural values by using paint in different densities. Surface research led him to dynamic brushstrokes.
Later, he turned to works that thinned the paint and allowed it to flow on the canvas. In the 1970s, he made monochrome works, influenced by Eastern philosophy. Later, he carried out a series of works with brush marks and scrapings in horizontal and vertical directions. After 1978, he concentrated on a vertical line that evokes a rift in his works.
