Inspired by Michel Foucault's theories of power and perception, young artists Görkem Kılavuz and Serhat Erdem invite viewers to a deep journey of thought in the "Progression of the Form" exhibition. The exhibition will meet art lovers at the Ahmet Adnan Saygun Art Center between August 9-31, 2024.
The "Progression of the Form" exhibition consists of works created by two brilliant names of contemporary art, Görkem Kılavuz and Serhat Erdem, centered on Michel Foucault's theories of power and perception. The exhibition takes viewers on an artistic journey through the concepts of the unconscious and death, offering the opportunity to question the individual's internal power dynamics.
An artistic journey in the footsteps of Foucault
In this exhibition, shaped under the direction of curator Aynur Tıkıroğlu, Foucault's theory of power is reinterpreted through works of art. In the works of Erdem and Kılavuz, the aesthetic expression of death and the complex structure of the unconscious draw attention. Viewers are invited to confront their own subconscious through these works.
The process of creating works with artists
Görkem Kılavuz states that he reflects themes such as memory, memorization and forgetting into his works, inspired by the dementia disease in his environment. The works he creates using oil and acrylic techniques offer a deep look at the mental complexity of his figures.
Serhat Erdem explores the individual's desire to transcend boundaries with the amorphous forms he creates with various materials. The artist's works reveal the individual's confinement to boundaries both set by himself and imposed by society.
A new breath in the art world
Both artists are originally from İzmir, and Erdem studied art at Dokuz Eylül University and Kılavuz studied art at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, shaping their careers. While Kılavuz continues his work in his studio in İzmir, Erdem started his art career in İzmir and continues it there, participating in various exhibitions and workshops.
