Famous Turkish Painter Savaş Simitli Passed Away...

The artist who left a mark with colorful canvases, bold brush strokes and countless works on his artistic journey, Savaş Simitli, has passed away.

Born in İzmir in 1960, Savaş Simitli shaped Turkish painting with his own efforts and is a painter known for his unique style and productivity. Simitli, who completed his primary and secondary education in İzmir, graduated from İzmir Atatürk High School in 1978 and entered the Gendarmerie Non-Commissioned Officer Class School in 1983 to enter the military profession.

His interest in art developed entirely through his own efforts. Simitli, who began painting with the trial-and-error method without receiving any academic art education, developed a unique understanding of color and style over time. He devoted his first 10 years to research and technical development; he tried many styles from impressionism to cubism and deepened his knowledge of color in particular.

CUBIST AND IMPRESSIONIST TOUCHES
Cubist effects, where small pieces are placed in a way that does not disrupt the integrity of the artist's works, are sometimes combined with illusionist approaches. Focusing on figurative works, Simitli's series of subjects include Anatolian women's headdresses, Efeler, phaetons, tango and Istanbul themes. He especially preferred to process historical textures with an impressionist interpretation in his Istanbul paintings.

GENDARME AND ART IN PUBLIC SPACE
In 1996, he won first place by designing the logo of the Gendarmerie General Command, which is still in use. In 2004, he took part in the establishment process of the Gendarmerie Museum and designed the official stamp printed in the name of the Gendarmerie in the same year.

Savaş Simitli's work titled "Hear My Silent Scream" was one of three works selected from Turkey within the scope of the Perspectives Art Project organized by AbbVie in 2014 and was exhibited in 15 countries.

The artist is also known for the importance he gives to social responsibility projects. He organized many exhibitions for the benefit of Mehmetçik Foundation, TSK Education Foundation and ADD Scholarship Students.

ANTIGONE ART HOUSE AND ITS LAST YEARS
After retiring in 2006, he founded Antigone Art House and then opened S. Simitli Art Workshop & Gallery, which bears his own name, in 2018. He started giving painting courses in Istanbul as of 2016.

Savaş Simitli is remembered not only for his paintings but also for the inspiration he gives to his students and his belief in the social power of art.
